These are genuine, common, and physiologically legible.

What's less reliable is the explanation being sold with them, and what's being sold as the cure. So this article does something the wellness content generally doesn't: it separates the parts with solid evidence behind them from the parts that are marketing, tells you plainly where the science is genuinely contested, and — most importantly — describes when these symptoms point to a treatable psychiatric or medical condition that a supplement will not touch.

What Is Nervous System Dysregulation?

"Nervous system dysregulation" is a popular umbrella term, not a formal medical diagnosis. It describes a real pattern — an autonomic nervous system that stays in a stress-activated state longer and more easily than it should — but you won't find it in the DSM or ICD, and no clinician can diagnose you with it as such.

Supplements are regulated as food, not medicine, which means claims about them face a far lower evidentiary bar than any prescription treatment.

Is a "Cortisol Detox" a Real Thing?

Short answer

No. "Cortisol detox" is a marketing term, not a medical procedure. Cortisol is essential to life — it regulates blood pressure, blood sugar, immune function, and the sleep-wake cycle. You do not want to detoxify it, and there is no established protocol for doing so.

Cortisol has, as one endocrinologist put it, a branding problem. It gets discussed as though it were a toxin to be purged, when in fact without it we would die. The real clinical question is not whether cortisol is "high" in the vague sense that wellness content means, but whether yours is genuinely outside the normal range — and that is a question answered by validated testing ordered by a physician, not by a symptom quiz or an at-home saliva kit.

Genuine cortisol disorders exist and are serious: Cushing's syndrome (excess cortisol) and Addison's disease or adrenal insufficiency (insufficient cortisol) are real endocrine conditions requiring specialist care. They are also relatively uncommon and produce a distinct clinical picture. If you have significant unexplained symptoms, that's a reason to see a physician — not a reason to buy a protocol.

What About "Adrenal Fatigue"?

Adrenal fatigue is not a recognized medical diagnosis. A systematic review of 58 studies published in BMC Endocrine Disorders concluded there is no substantiation for it as an actual medical condition, and no endocrinology society in the world recognizes it. This matters practically: the symptoms attributed to it — persistent tiredness, brain fog, poor sleep, low motivation — overlap with hypothyroidism, anemia, sleep apnea, depression, and diabetes. Is Polyvagal Theory Scientifically Valid?
